Principal's Update

August 5, 2008

Dear Students and Parents,

I hope you are continuing to have an enjoyable and restful summer break!  Here at Squalicum, we have been preparing for an exciting new year.  I am looking forward to working with both staff and students to provide a quality educational experience, one that prepares all students for continued academic success after high school.  Please know that the administrative team and staff are here to support you in your involvement and success over the course of the school year.

All parents/guardians of students at Squalicum will be receiving a copy of the High School and Beyond Guide in the mail.  Watch for this booklet to arrive at your home – do NOT throw it away!  Designed to serve as a “one-stop” reference to assist families in guiding students through 4 years of high school and to prepare for their “next steps” after high school, the booklet is filled with valuable information about graduation requirements, assessment, planning for college and advanced training options, financial aid, grade-level checklists, and more.  The guide represents a partnership of all county high school counselors, career centers, Whatcom County Tech Prep Consortium, several businesses and higher education institutions.  It will also be used throughout the year with students in guidance units and at parent nights.  Please keep this booklet and refer to often!  Please contact the Career Center at ext. 5170 if you do not receive the guide or if you have questions.

We hope you will refer often to the enclosed calendar for August and September.   Please note that our fall BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT is planned for Monday, September 22 at 6:30 pm.  We look forward to seeing you then.

Our Parent Teacher Student Association and leadership team is excited to work toward building culture, unity and community at Squalicum High.  The meetings, published on the school calendar will occur each month so please review/record the dates.  I encourage you to join these meetings as they provide an avenue for families to contribute ideas to improve the academic success, health, and well-being of all of our students.

Yours,
